Employers throughout regional areas of Western Australia may wish to attend one of a series of forums run by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).
The forums are designed to provide information about skilled migration programs to local employers, helping them to address their labour needs.
During the events, which begin next week (May 31) and will run until July 1, employers will have the opportunity to get an overview of the different options available for hiring skilled workers, as well as steps that can be taken to avoid skills shortages in essential industries and remote locations.
A WA regional outreach officer will be onhand at all the sessions to answer immigration questions. Employers curious about a specific issue, including the 457 visa program, options for permanent skilled migrant workers and the employer nomination scheme are advised to request a private consultation to discuss their issues in more detail.
Regional employers may also wish to seek out information about migration agreements specific to their area, as well as checking the work rights of existing and future employees.
According to one departmental spokesman, there is a growing demand for skilled migrants in Australia.
“The skill stream has increased by 12 000 places on 2010-11 program planning levels to 125 850 places," commented the DIAC representative.
He added: "Policy initiatives are being implemented to assist Australian employers, businesses and regional areas to better address their skill needs."
More support for the skilled migration program was announced in the 2011 federal Budget, as well as a number of other initiatives to help meet the demand for skilled workers in regional Australia.
However, it is not only regional areas of the country that are benefiting from the skills of foreign workers.
Sandi Logan from the IADC commented to ABC News that a rising number of employers in Canberra are hiring overseas workers on the 457 visa program, with particular emphasis on the construction industry.
Other popular areas of work for temporary skilled employees included financial and insurance services, rental hiring, warehousing, transport and real estate.
