Australians are getting married and divorce older, reveals ABS

Date: Nov 28, 2013

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has just released some interesting facts and figures about divorce rates Down Under.

If you're currently going through a divorce and are seeking the advice of a divorce law firm, you're not alone. In 2012, a total of 49,917 divorces were granted to couples in Australia.

James Eystone-Hinkins, ABS Director of Health and Vitals, said this represents a marked increase on the divorce rate that was recorded over the previous year.

The number of people getting married is also on the rise, with a whopping 123,244 Australians tying the knot in 2012.

Mr Eystone-Hinkins also shed some light on the median ages at which couples both opt into and out of wedlock in this country.

Last year, the median age for males saying "I do" was 31.4 years old. This is 2.7 years older than the median age in 1992, when males were most likely to get married at 28.7 years old.

The median age for females has also gone up in the past decade. In the early 1990s, it was approximately 26.3 years old. Now, it's 3.1 years higher - 29.4 years old, to be exact.

Interestingly, this jump in median ages rose most dramatically between 1992 and 1997.

Mr Eystone-Hinkins said the median age at marriage for both men and women in Australia "has remained virtually unchanged" over the past five years.

Because the median age at which couples meet at the end of the aisle has increased, so, too, has the median age at which some of them decide to cut their losses.

This rise has been "gradual" over the past five years, revealed Mr  Eystone-Hinkins. In 2012, the median age for males getting separated was 41.0 years old. For those getting divorced, it was 44.6 years old.

Just as women are more likely to get married at a younger age than their male counterparts, they are also more likely to be more youthful when they arrange a separation or divorce. The median age for women going through these in 2012 was 38.5 and 41.8 years old, respectively.
