There are two types of “medical treatment” visas available to people who wish to come to Australia for medical treatment.
Medical Treatment Short Stay (Subclass 675)
This visa allows an applicant to stay in Australia for up to three months. If the medical treatment is likely take more than three months, you should apply for a Medical Treatment Long Stay Visa (Subclass 685).
This visa may be available to people who:
- have a confirmed medical treatment or consultation in Australia (other than for surrogate motherhood);
- can prove that they have enough money to pay for the trip to Australia and the cost of medical treatment in Australia;
- meet relevant health criterion; and
- are of good character.
Children may apply for a Medical Treatment Short Stay Visa (Subclass 675), but parental consent may be required.
People who come to Australia on a Medical Treatment Short Stay (Subclass 675) visa cannot claim Australian Government health benefits.
Medical Treatment Long Stay Visa (Subclass 685)
The length of stay in Australia permitted under a Medical Treatment Long Stay Visa (Subclass 685) will depend on the period of medical treatment required in Australia.
This visa may be available to people who:
- have a confirmed medical treatment or consultation in Australia (other than for surrogate motherhood);
- can prove that they have enough money to pay for the trip to Australia and the cost of medical treatment in Australia;
- meet relevant health criterion; and
- are of good character.
This visa may also be available to people who are already in Australia and whose applications for residency in Australia have been refused for health reasons if they are over 50 years old and are unable to leave Australia for medical reasons.
Children may apply for a Medical Treatment Long Stay Visa (Subclass 685), but parental consent may be required.
People who come to Australia on a Medical Treatment Long Stay (Subclass 685) visa cannot claim Australian Government health benefits.
