Julia Sweeney was admitted to practise law in 2001. Prior to her admission as a lawyer, she worked as a registered nurse within the NSW hospital system for a number of years and gained qualifications in Emergency Nursing and Health Management. Julia was a clinical nurse specialist reporting to medical administration about risk management in the context of heath care complaints and liabilities.
Julia joined Craddock Murray Neumann in 2001 where she has since worked exclusively in the area of litigation, and particularly in negligence and in debt collection matters.
An experienced litigator, Julia brings a wealth of research experience and uses the forensic and analytical skills gained whilst working in the healthcare system in her practise of the law. Because she has been able to combine her understanding of the healthcare environment with her knowledge of the law, she has also been able to provide effective representation to clients in disciplinary enquiries and inquests, and is able to advise those receiving health care of their legal rights, such as the rights to access medical records, rights in relation to informed consent, the rights of family members etc.
Julia adopts a pragmatic and realistic approach to matters which has earned her the respect of both the legal and medical professions. In recognition of her medico-legal profile, Julia has been appointed as a member of St Vincent’s Hospital’s Health Research Ethics Committee.
In acting for clients, her extensive preparation, research and background knowledge enables her to find and present evidence which those with narrower experience might not realise is relevant.
In addition to representing clients in Court, Julia will also use alternative dispute resolution procedures, has attended many mediations and is a skilled negotiator.
